How it is worked out

eBay charges almost everything as one fee, the final value fee, and works it out on the total amount of the sale: the item price, the shipping and handling you charge, and the sales tax eBay collects from the buyer. That last part is why eBay usually takes more than the headline percentage of what you are actually paid.

  • Final value fee — a percentage of the total sale that depends on the category. In most categories it is 13.6% up to $7,500 and 2.35% on any part above.
  • Per-order fee — $0.40 on an order over $10, $0.30 on an order of $10 or less, and none on sneakers of $150 or more.
  • Promoted listings — your ad rate, as a percentage of the total sale, when the item sold through a general campaign.
  • International fee — 1.65% of the total sale when the buyer is outside the US and you ship it yourself rather than through eBay International Shipping.

Profit is what the buyer paid for the item and the shipping, less eBay’s fees, less what the sale cost you. The figures are eBay’s published US rates for a seller with no store subscription and an account in good standing, as of October 2026. Below-standard accounts pay a surcharge on top.

Questions people ask

How much does eBay take from a sale?
In most categories, 13.6% of the total sale plus a per-order fee of $0.40 ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). The total sale includes the item, the shipping you charge and the sales tax eBay collects, so on a $50 item with $10 shipping and 7% tax, eBay’s fees come to about $9.13 — closer to 15% of what you are paid than to 13.6%.
Does eBay charge its fee on sales tax?
Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total amount of the sale, and its own help page lists sales tax as part of that total. The tax itself goes to the state, but the fee on it comes out of your payout. Set the tax rate to 0 here to see the difference.
Which categories are charged differently?
Books, movies and music pay 15.3%; trading cards, comics and coins 13.25%; sneakers of $150 or more 8% with no per-order fee; handbags 15% up to $2,000 and 9% above; jewelry 15% up to $5,000 and 9% above; watches 15% on the first $1,000, 6.5% up to $7,500 and 3% beyond; guitars 6.7%. In most categories the part of a sale above $7,500 is charged 2.35%.
How are promoted listings charged?
With a general (cost per sale) campaign you pick an ad rate, and when an item sells through the ad eBay charges that percentage of the total sale on top of the final value fee. Enter your ad rate to see it included.
What about insertion fees and store subscriptions?
Without a store you get 250 free listings a month, then $0.35 per listing, charged whether or not the item sells. A store subscription gives more free listings and, in some categories, lower final value fees. This calculator uses the standard rates for a seller with no store, which is where most resellers start.
